Commenting on the parties' joint strategy on tax and jobs, Berni Brady, Director of AONTAS said: "In advance of the general election, we have been lobbying all political parties to ensure improved supports for adult learners. One of the key demands we are making is to introduce paid educational leave for workers with Junior Cert qualifications or less. We are delighted that the Fine Gael / Labour policy launched today commits to introducing two weeks statutory annual paid training leave, targeted at low-skilled workers."
AONTAS also welcomed the parties' commitment to improving part-time learning options for workers with low levels of education. "Fine Gael and Labour propose to use the National Training Fund to pay for part-time higher education for people who haven't had the chance to go to college before. At the moment, workers engaging in part-time higher education are unfairly penalised against, as they have to pay fees. These fees are a huge obstacle to those hoping to increase their skills and education levels. AONTAS demands that the next government makes a firm commitment to abolishing fees for part-time learners.
"We also welcome Fine Gael and Labours' recognition that a 'culture of learning' must be developed across the workforce and across society. This will be key to ensuring that workers in Ireland realise the benefits of upskilling and help to maintain our economic success."
