What is One Step Up?

22 Jan 2019
As part of the ‘Increasing Pathways, Increasing Participation’ 2017 – 2019 project for the European Agenda for Adult Learning (EAAL), AONTAS provides a free Information Referral Service called One Step Up that supports thousands of people every year to find out about their education and training options.

Having worked with, represented, and advocated for the rights of adult learners for 50 years, we have heard from learners how hard it can be to take those first steps back to education - even knowing where to look for information can be a challenge. The One Step Up Freephone Helpline (1800 303669) and Website (www.onestepup.ie) helps people to navigate their search by providing a starting point on education and training opportunities.

Whether you're looking to acquire new skills, achieve qualifications, gain employment, build self-confidence or meet new people, we can help you find the path that suits your needs. Last year approximately 7,000 people set out on this path by answering four basic questions about themselves in 60 seconds:

1.      What age group am I in?

2.      Which county do I live in?

3.      What information am I hoping to find out?

4.      Am I retired or employed?

While we can quantify the demand for One Step Up, the positive impact on people's lives, relationships with their families, friends, local communities and wider society when they (re)sit the Leaving Certificate, complete a training course or engage with education or training on any level simply cannot be underestimated.
