In her opening speech, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Kerry Cuskelly, highlighted that those receiving awards “act as role models for others, particularly other Travellers, in accessing education.” Kerry reminded us that success requires persistence and finding mentors to support the journey.

This year’s ceremony was co-hosted by Senator Eileen Flynn, a past recipient of these awards. In her address, Eileen emphasised how “critically important it is to recognise young people in our community.” Joining her as a co-host was the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Donna Cooney, a strong advocate for lifelong learning.

A message from Taoiseach Simon Harris was played commending all the awardees. He stated, “Education is one of the most powerful tools we have as a society. It shapes our lives and improves our future.”

Celebrating over 30 members of the Traveller Community, achievements included:

  • 12 young people received their Junior Certificates, alongside several QQI awards.
  • 13 learners earned their Leaving Certificates.
  • 6 members of the Traveller community were awarded a BSocSc in Community and Youth Work from Maynooth University.
  • 1 learner was awarded a BA in Community Development from Ulster University.
  • 1 learner was awarded a Master’s degree in Business.
  • 1 learner was awarded a Master’s degree in Creative Writing.
  • 2 learners were awarded PhDs.

Dr Thomas McCann received his Doctorate, while an honorary Doctorate was awarded to Missy Collins for her long-standing dedication to the community.

Reflecting on his journey, Dr McCann shared, “I didn’t get the Junior Cert or Leaving Cert, but I got a PhD. We still have a way to go to create a more equal society.” He will continue his work with the Traveller Counselling Service and in academia.

On a personal note, I’ve attended these awards for many years and have watched them grow each year. It’s evident that the incredible work led by Cathleen McDonagh  Clark and her education team—Clodagh, Paddy, Jules, and Vanessa—brings these awards to life. The success and visibility of the awards continue to grow.

While there is still more to do, it’s truly inspiring to witness the pride, achievement, and progress. I look forward to an even bigger event next year.
