What stood out to me was the sheer number of learners receiving multiple certificates, which was a clear indication of the hunger and desire to learn in Dublin’s North Inner City.
During the ceremony, Mary McPhillips, CEO of Daughters of Charity Community Services, reminded us that, “community education is much more than belonging to something; it is a precious gift in our community. Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”

Guest speaker, Paul Downes, Director of the Educational Disadvantage Centre at Dublin City University stated, “the purpose of education is a function of peace in society, democracy and peace.”
Another guest speaker, Gary Gannon, Social Democrat TD for Dublin North Central and long champion of education and social equity, said, “education is liberation.”
In her speech, Gráinne Conroy spoke passionately about the vibrant community education landscape in Dublin’s North Inner City, describing it as “a buzzing ecosystem of support”. She highlighted the mutual respect and collaboration that define the area and thanked the City of Dublin for its continued support, as well as AONTAS for its advocacy work at the political level. This support ensures that community education continues to be funded and able to meet the needs of all learners, particularly the most marginalised in our society.
During the event, I had the opportunity to speak with HACE learners, Ibrahim and Amenah Kalled, who fled from the war in Palestine. They told me how Ireland had made them feel welcome, and participating in education gave them a sense of belonging. Amenah proudly showed off her craft work and beamed as she received her certificate.
Thank you to the incredible staff of HACE for inviting us to join such an inspiring celebration of adult learning. It was testament to the power of education to transform lives and build stronger communities.
