This category, which is sponsored by SAOLTA, is open to adult learning initiatives that empower people into active citizenship roles in their own communities.

What is Global Citizenship Education?

Global Citizenship Education supports learners to think globally and act locally. It builds awareness of global challenges such as sustainability, justice, inclusion and climate action, while developing the skills, confidence and agency needed to respond in meaningful ways.

Meet the Finalists in the Global Citizenship Education Category for 2026

Preparation for Preschool Programme – Hill Street Family Resource Centre

The Preparation for Preschool Programme (PFP), developed by Hill Street Family Resource Centre in 2012, supports both children and parents as they transition into preschool. The programme fosters children’s independence, imagination, language and communication skills while also supporting parents in their own learning and confidence.

A Development Worker facilitates sessions with parents to assess their needs and develop activities in response. Parents can access family support, information on local services, and opportunities for adult and community education including global citizenship, voter education and workshops.

During the first term, parents remain with their child to help them settle and feel secure. As confidence grows, parents attend a parents’ group within the building while their child participates in PFP sessions. This gradual approach supports successful separation and strengthens the parent child bond.

The programme is unique in that it supports the care and education of both caregiver and child in a relaxed and welcoming environment. As one parent reflected, “I came because I thought it would be good for my child, but I realised it is also good for me.”

Family Learning Horticulture – Tipperary ETB

The Family Learning Horticulture Group (Céim Eile) is an intergenerational family learning initiative developed by Tipperary ETB. From September 2024 to May 2025, families worked towards a QQI Level 3 Food Crop Production module.

Learning took place in a polytunnel and classroom setting, focusing on practical horticulture skills, sustainability and community building. The group included home schooling families and those connected to the Youthreach Céim Eile service.

This initiative empowered families to grow their own food, live more sustainably and connect with nature. It fostered relationships, shared life experiences and deepened understanding of sustainability through a global citizenship lens.

Empowering Communities in Circular Opportunities – Rediscovery Centre

Empowering Communities in Circular Opportunities (ECCO) is a community led adult education programme that takes an innovative and experiential approach to climate action.

ECCO combines practical skills development with deep community engagement and grassroots empowerment. It supports communities to transition toward low carbon living through creative knowledge exchange and collaborative problem solving.

With a strong emphasis on circular living and resource management, the programme turns awareness into tangible action that reduces waste and builds resilience.

ECCO is part of the Community Climate Action Programme Strand 2, funded by the Department of Environment, Climate and Communications and administered by Pobal. Over three years, the Rediscovery Centre co created the programme with EDI Centre Longford, Roscommon Women’s Network and Tait House Community Enterprise in Limerick, ensuring activities were inclusive, relevant and community focused.

Roots and Horizons Global Citizenship through Erasmus+ – Cork ETB

Roots and Horizons is an Erasmus+ project developed by Cork ETB’s Adult Education Service to promote sustainability, wellbeing and global citizenship.

Following a successful application to Léargas in 2024, funding was secured for 14 adult learners to take part in a five day exchange at Noorderpoort College in Groningen, the Netherlands in September 2025.

The international project combined workshops, cultural exchange and hands on sustainability learning. Participants explored biodiversity, food growing, mindfulness and wellbeing through a global citizenship lens. For many learners, it was their first time travelling abroad or participating in a European learning exchange.

The project provided a transformative experience, strengthening intercultural understanding and reinforcing the value of lifelong learning. It has since inspired wider discussions within Cork ETB about embedding sustainability and global citizenship across Adult Education programmes.
