I have a better belief in myself and my ability to achieve different things

The Longford Women’s Link (LWL) Retail Skills Mentoring Programme was shortlisted for an AONTAS STAR Award in 2018 for their work in promoting social inclusion. The programme provides supported volunteering and mentoring and delivers accredited training and supports to individuals from disadvantaged areas of the Midlands. Training and mentoring is provided at LWL's Community Education Centre and their social enterprise, Willow Traders. Here Tara shares her experience of how the programme improved her self-confidence and how the fantastic tutor support she received helped her to believe in herself.

I was nervous because I thought everyone would be better than me

I am a single mother and have been working out the back of a dry cleaners sorting out clothes for the last 16 years. I had no formal education or training so this was my first time taking on a course. I admit I was very sceptical coming down to meet with Karen for the first time as I didn’t know if I would be able for the course. I was nervous because I thought everyone would be better than me and I didn’t have a lot of faith in myself. But I signed up for the course and kept in contact with Karen over the summer

I never thought I was good enough to be out the front, talking to people, dealing with customers

I went to class on the first day not knowing what to expect, I was extremely anxious and nervous. But having made it to the last day of class I can honestly say that my journey has been a very positive one. I never thought I was good enough to be out the front, talking to people, dealing with customers. I always stayed out the back where no one could see me - that knocks your confidence. I didn’t believe in myself or that I could do anything worth-while.

I have a better belief in myself and my ability to achieve different things

I have to say thank you to the retail course and our lovely mentor Karen, it has given me so much confidence and a new focus. I really looked forward to every class, going in to a great bunch of women. It has been one of the most enjoyable experiences, Karen our mentor was brilliant in every way, woman to woman, as a mentor she was always available for any support we might need. I feel I have gained so much so far and I am really looking forward to the future. I started a computer course a few weeks into starting the retail course. I have a better belief in myself and my ability to achieve different things; I have so much more confidence thanks to this course.
