"I’m proud of getting the Diploma, especially in such confusing times with the COVID-19 pandemic. "

Kane shares his experience of returning to education as an adult. Kane's story is shared as part of the #CelebrateLearners2020 campaign and the Learners as Leaders Programme, which is funded by the European Agenda for Adult Learning.

"I’m proud of getting the Diploma, especially in such confusing times with the COVID-19 pandemic. The last few months were very different and challenging but I’m really proud to have completed it."

Reason for doing the course:

I was interested in Barbering and I also wanted to progress my education. Barbering has changed a lot in the last few years and it’s now very popular so I could see it as a job I would love to do. It was really handy that Tullamore Community Training Centre had the VTCT Level 2 Diploma as it was close enough to my hometown and I also knew a few people in the centre already which helped.

What impact it has had on me:

It has really helped me grow as a person and become in touch with the real world and working life. I done work experience as part of the course, I was working in a Barber shop in Birr and that gave me great experience interacting with customers in a real working environment.

What I’m most proud of in completing the programme:

I’m proud of getting the Diploma, especially in such confusing times with the Covid-19 pandemic. The last few months were very different and challenging but I’m really proud to have completed it. Now I have opportunities to do further training and I’ve already applied to do the VTCT Level 3 in Barbering. I’ve also made a lot of new friends in the centre and have a good group of people around me now.
