About this event

What role does adult education play in supporting and strengthening democracy? With democracy in danger throughout Europe and beyond, what can adult education practitioners do?

As part of AONTAS' Imagining Adult Education series, Dr. Fergal Finnegan and Lisa Kilbride will host this free and interactive webinar. We will explore the role of adult educators in a healthy and progressive democracy and what you and your colleagues can do to build democratic education into your practice.

As Fergal wrote in AONTAS' Adult Learner Journal (2016, p.46), “democracy – based on full participation and meaningful deliberation – has to be learnt and relearnt, practiced and questioned.”

Where better to do this than in the adult and community education classroom?

Lisa Kilbride will connect theory and practice, demonstrating how to bring democracy into the adult education classroom.

Lisa is an innovative and experienced teacher and doctoral student at Maynooth University, who also works at the Dublin Adult Learning Centre (DALC). Lisa facilitates a Community Action class, and designs the curriculum according to the issues that matter most to the learners, using a Freirian approach.

Fergal and Lisa’s combined knowledge and expertise will make for a fascinating and engaging discussion about what we can do in adult education to encourage active citizenship and political engagement, and lots more.

Join us online on Friday, 18th November. Places are limited and early registration is advised.
