An Introduction: TO SWITCH - TOwards Senior Workers’ Innovative Training CHallenges

9 Apr 2021
In this blog post, AONTAS Project Officer for Capacity Building, Órla Mannion, highlights AONTAS’ involvement in a new Erasmus+ project that supports older adult learners.

TO SWITCH - TOwards Senior Workers’ Innovative Training CHallenges.

The TO SWITCH project aims to support older people in the current climate of digitalization by providing them with new flexible learning opportunities.

TO SWITCH seeks to both transform the delivery of education and training with a new innovative methodology for this learner cohort and it seeks promote lifelong learning.

One of the intended outcomes of this project is to cultivate a digital fluency and a skill elasticity among senior workers, in the face of constant technological expansion and development in the labour market.

The project focuses on:

Below are three points that emphasise the critical nature of this project and the importance of the results it hopes to achieve.

1. Right to Human Dignity

According to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, “Human dignity is inviolable. It must be respected and protected.” If the value of senior workers depreciates due to a lack of meaningful opportunities to upskill, resulting in exclusion, this would constitute a breach of dignity. TO SWITCH is attempting to combat this potential for exclusion by ensuring that training practices are appropriately updated and designed so as to increase the capacity of senior workers and learners alike.

2. Right to Engage in Work

According to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, “Everyone has the right to engage in work”. TO SWITCH increases the capacity of senior workers to engage in work and participate in a constantly evolving labour market, by developing appropriate means of continuously training senior workers in new skills and digital functions necessary to their job role.

3. Right to Education

According to the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, “Everyone has the right to education and to have access to vocational and continuing training”. TO SWITCH is working to create meaningful training and learning opportunities for senior workers looking to upskill, become involved in lifelong learning and participate in active aging strategies.

Representing and honouring these fundamental and intrinsically linked rights, is at the forefront of the TO SWITCH strategy and its intended outcomes. AONTAS is excited to be a partner on this important and highly relevant project.
