We are delighted to announce the appointment of Lilian Nwanze-Akobo as the first-ever Vice Chairperson of the AONTAS Board of Directors. This marks an exciting new chapter in AONTAS’ governance as we continue building strategic leadership in the field of adult and community education.
As Ireland’s national adult learning organisation, AONTAS is proud to champion community education, Learner Voice, equality, and social justice. The creation of the Vice Chairperson role is an important step in strengthening our governance and forging a values-driven and collaborative shared leadership approach.
Our newly appointed Vice Chairperson brings a wealth of experience, insight, and passion for adult and community education. Lilian is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Adult and Community Education in Maynooth University. She is the Co-Director of the Higher Diploma in Further Education and the Turn to Teaching Programme, which aims to promote diversity in the teaching profession. Lilian is also a member of the Maynooth University Sanctuary Committee and the Race Equality Steering Group.
Lilian has an extensive range of publications and conference contributions including ‘Why we need to speak about race in Further Education and Training’ (2004) and ‘The role of teachers in creating critically inclusive classrooms’ (2002). In addition, Lilian is a qualified lawyer with many years of experience and knowledge, which she brings to her work on the Board.
AONTAS Chairperson John D’Arcy announced the result on July 23rd, giving his heart-felt congratulations to Lilian and commenting on the enormity of Lillian’s impact already as a Board member: “Lillian is an open-minded and forward-thinking person who uses her knowledge and experience to speak truth to important issues with an authenticity and insight unmatched by others”.
Both Lilian and John will work closely with our CEO Dearbháil Lawless and the wider AONTAS Board to support the strategic development of the organisation, ensure good governance, and contribute to our collective vision of a more equitable, accessible and justice-oriented adult education system.
