AONTAS has been asked to nominate adult learners to the Boards of Ireland’s 16 Education and Training Boards (ETBs). Education and Training Boards are statutory education authorities with responsibility for education and training, youth work and a range of other statutory functions.
The role of the successful candidate will be to sit on a Board for up to five years, attend up to seven Board meetings per year and read and prepare material for each of these meetings. Each ETB has 21 members on their Board:
- 12 local authority elected members (county or city councillors)

- 2 elected staff members
- 2 appointed parents’ nominees
- 5 appointed members from bodies who have a special interest in or knowledge of education and training. This includes AONTAS.
AONTAS will nominate one person who identifies as female and one person who identifies as male. We are looking for candidates that meet certain criteria, for example, they must be a current or past adult learner (within the past five years), be experienced in raising issues around education and be committed to social justice and equality. The person must also be over the age of 18 and live within the relevant ETB area.
You cannot be nominated if you are:
- The Chief Executive of an ETB, or a staff member of the ETB employed in certain roles set out in Education and Training Boards Act 2013 (Section 32) Order 2019.
- Related to any of the ETB staff mentioned in the point above.
- Related to any other ETB Board member.
- A parent of a child attending an ETB run school, college or other education centre.
If you feel you meet these criteria and would like to submit an application to be considered by AONTAS as a nominee, you can fill out this form online or email this form to Head of Advocacy and Policy at AONTAS, Conor Thompson at cthompson@aontas.com. There is also the option of posting the form to 2nd Floor, 83-87 Main Street, Ranelagh, Dublin 6, Ireland D06 E0H1, for the attention of Conor Thompson.
The deadline to submit this application is Wednesday 10th July.
Once we have reviewed all applications, AONTAS will put forward our two candidates and the ETBs will then make their final selection after they meet in August 2024. The successful candidate will receive training from the ETB and outline the exact role and responsibilities.
If you have any questions, or would like more information, please contact Conor Thompson, Head of Advocacy and Policy at AONTAS, on 087 793 8768.
