AONTAS Launches One Step Up Information Booklet

AONTAS, the National Adult Learning Organisation, has today (17.08.17) launched its new One Step Up Information Booklet - a guide to education and training options for adults in Ireland. The booklet is launched as thousands of adults are considering taking up education and training options this autumn.

Over 300,000 adults return to learning each year, but for someone who has had a past negative educational experience, or has been out of formal education for a long time, it can be a daunting step. Supports for adult learners, including information, are essential.

Learners return to education for many different reasons: to learn something new, to get a job, to help their kids with homework, to make friends or because they want to get a qualification. Whatever their reason for doing a course, there are a variety of options available.

AONTAS hears from many adult learners about their positive experiences of returning to learning. Wider benefits include gaining qualifications and skills but also personal, social and cultural development. Learners also report increased confidence, being able to help children with their homework and improved mental health as other benefits.

New Information Booklet

AONTAS has developed the One Step Up Information Booklet (now available on www.onestepup.ie) to make it easier for people to find their options quickly. In developing this booklet AONTAS has spoken to many organisations who are providers of courses, information, advice or support in adult and community education, so that we can provide the most up to date information.

The booklet aims to be accessible and uses symbols to direct readers to information including: guidance, where to find courses, and funding options. Contacts for local Adult Education Guidance and Information Services, community education groups and third level contacts can also be found in this useful resource for both learners and providers.

“You will learn something new and meet new people who are feeling the same emotions - together you will reach the mountain top of achievement.” - One Step Up Learner, Age 48
