Community, Learning, and Progress at The Bridge Project Open Day
Yesterday, our Community Education Officer, Lorraine O’Connor, attended the Open Day hosted by our Community Education Network member, The Bridge Project. With over 70 guests in attendance, the day was full of energy, live demonstrations, and inspiring learner stories.
The Bridge Project. (n.d.). The Bridge Project supports those who may experience the criminal justice system and/or a history of drug addiction to realise their full potential, reintegrate, and attain employment. Retrieved from https://www.bridge.ie/
Through their education and training service, The Bridge supports over 60 learners at any given time, offering flexible learning programmes designed to meet each client’s individual needs. Participants can engage in a wide range of educational and training programmes from:
- Personal & Professional Development
- Computers
- Career Preparation
- Cooking Skills
- Mathematics
- Community Development
- Art
- Communication Skills
- DIY & Home Repair
- Hair & Beauty Diploma
- Barista Skills
- Barbering Skills
The centre provides a wide range of vital programmes, including the JARC Bridge (Change Works), The Joint Agency Response to Crime (JARC) programme—an innovative, multiagency initiative that works with people who have come into contact with the justice system. Through this collaborative approach, participants receive tailored guidance and practical support to help them make positive, lasting changes in their lives.
At The Bridge Project, participants can engage in education, community employment, training initiatives, and employability. These pathways help individuals build confidence, develop new skills, and work towards brighter futures.
Another core offering is the Community Employment Scheme, which provides a supportive space where participants can learn, grow, and gain valuable workplace skills. This handson experience helps prepare them for longterm success in the workforce.
The Bridge is also home to a social enterprise, Clean Slate Property Services. Through Clean Slate, participants gain real-life work experience in a professional setting while developing practical skills that strengthen their employment prospects.
The open day saw multiple stakeholders and prospective learners come through the doors, with learners and tutors providing hands-on demos from the Hair & Beauty, Bicycle Mechanics, and DIY & Home Repair courses, along with information on the full range of programmes available.
What truly stood out on the day was the Bridge team’s nonjudgemental, personcentred approach. Staff meet learners exactly where they are in their lives, offering consistent encouragement and support.
When asked about what being part of the The Bridge Project meant to them, I consistently heard, ” We are not judged by our past, we come in with a clean slate and the same opportunities to learn and to change our lives, it gives us purpose?
Learner Story
“I’ve been to so many courses over the years, but none of them ever felt right for me. I tried Youthreach, and I even tried a PLC, but I still didn’t feel like I’d found my place.
Then I came here and everything changed. It just works for me. I finally feel like I belong. The staff are amazing; they encourage you so much and really want you to succeed.
I’m now doing Hair and Beauty at Level 5, and I’ve been supported by the community employment scheme to do further training in another nail salon, where I’m hoping to get my work placement. The staff at The Bridge have even offered to help me find a job afterwards.
What I love most is that you can choose to do other subjects; you’re not made to do it, so you do it because you want to. I’ve already completed about nine different certificates in six months. I’ve done Personal Finance, Personal Skills, Health Related Fitness, and Barista training, and a few more. I want to get a job, but ill do more courses while I’m still here, Mary
Finding Stability, Purpose, and a New Path
“Other learners told me that being part of this programme gave them structure at a time when their lives felt out of control. Many had gone through incredibly difficult periods — dealing with addiction, getting caught up in crime, and ultimately ending up in prison.
“Being here has given me my life back. I have a routine now. I’m learning. I’m earning a wage. I’m in a much better place with my family. The Bridge has given me something to live for again. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I’m on the right path.” Sharon
A huge thank you to the incredible team at The Bridge Project for hosting such an inspiring and insightful event. Your unwavering commitment, dedication, and belief in creating second chances and empowering people shine through in everything you do.
I’d also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the learners who spoke so openly and honestly with me yesterday about their experiences. I wish each of them continued success and happiness on their life journey.
AONTAS and the Community Education Network look forward to many collaborations and working with you in the years ahead.
