AONTAS Statement: Call For Action Regarding Tensions In Local Communities

In light of recent tensions and the spread of false information; learners, staff, and communities are facing the consequences of poor policy, under resourcing, and a lack of communication.

AONTAS does not condone violence, threatening behaviour, or any intention to cause harm. It should have no place in Irish society. We welcome and encourage diversity. Every person deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. People seeking refuge must be provided with care and support. They are valued new members of our community.

There is also a need to recognise long term frustrations and prevent future harm. Labelling people as ‘scumbags’, negatively portraying working-class communities, and making assumptions about people’s employment is fuelling mistrust and division in Ireland.

We believe that it is time to listen. It is time to communicate. We call on Government to create opportunities for meaningful dialogue and to prioritise both investment in underserved local communities and make national policy changes.
