AONTAS Community Education Against Disinformation Project Nominated for Media Literacy Award
AONTAS’ Community Education Against Disinformation (CEAD) project has been nominated for a Media Literacy Award in the category of ‘Best Community-Based Media Literacy Initiative’.
Launched by AONTAS in 2025, the project explores how adult and community education can respond to online disinformation, racism and social division. Through research and storytelling workshops with learners and practitioners, the project developed the AONTAS Community Education Against Disinformation Workbook, which supports educators to create safe, inclusive spaces for dialogue, critical reflection and collective learning.
AONTAS currently delivers free workshops across the island of Ireland, supporting adult educators to use the workbook to facilitate discussion and learning with their own adult learners.
The Media Literacy Awards recognise projects, programmes, educators and organisations that help people develop the skills to critically access, analyse, evaluate and create media.
Commenting on the nomination, AONTAS CEO Dearbháil Lawless said:
“We’re thrilled to be shortlisted for the Media Literacy Ireland Awards. Disinformation is being weaponised to threaten community cohesion and Irish democracy. At AONTAS, we recognise adult learning as a social justice movement, and we created the Community Education Against Disinformation workbook to help combat these threats. AONTAS has been delivering workshops across Ireland to improve media literacy, strengthen human connection and protect people targeted by harmful propaganda movements.”
The winners of the Media Literacy Awards will be announced on 11th November at the Virgin Media Studios in Dublin.
