Beyond Funding: Building Capacity, Skills and Expertise for Lasting Change Through the AONTAS Community Education Network
By AONTAS Community Education Officer Lorraine O’Connor
Our recent Community Education Network meeting brought together 38 participants from 30 organisations for an inspiring afternoon of shared learning, reflection, and planning for the future.
One of the highlights of the meeting was hearing from two member presenters whose stories powerfully demonstrated the transformative impact of community education. Their experiences reminded us that education is about far more than gaining qualifications. It is about building confidence, creating opportunities, rebuilding lives, and empowering individuals to realise their full potential.
Powerful Learner Stories
Participants heard the remarkable story of learner John Kenny from Matt Talbot Community Trust, whose journey from addiction to education illustrates the profound impact that community education can have, not only on individuals but on families and communities. Through engagement in learning, he developed new skills, achieved qualifications, and progressed to designing and delivering programmes that now support others. Importantly, he reflected on the positive influence his educational journey had on his daughter, demonstrating the intergenerational impact of community education. His experience provided a powerful example of the social return on investment that community education delivers, highlighting benefits that extend far beyond what can be captured through statistics alone.
Members were equally inspired by the story behind A Rose Over the Sunset, a powerful testament to resilience, determination, and hope. During the session, Evelyn Mason of Cork Simon shared her remarkable journey from experiencing homelessness and addiction to becoming a published author. Her story demonstrated how encouragement, support, and access to education can empower individuals to overcome significant challenges and pursue ambitions they may once have believed were beyond reach.
The launch of A Rose Over the Sunset was a milestone achievement, celebrated in the grand surroundings of Cork City Hall and attended by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Denis Barrett, representatives from Cork Learning City, the ALL Office, Cork ETB, and many others who gathered to recognise Evelyn’s accomplishment.
Evelyn’s story is a powerful example of the transformative impact of community education and support services. It highlights how investing in people can unlock creativity, build confidence, and create opportunities for individuals to follow their dreams. Her journey serves as an inspiring reminder that, with the right support, it is possible to overcome adversity, achieve personal goals, and create lasting change.
These stories served as an important reminder that while numbers and outputs have their place, the true impact of community education is best understood through the voices and experiences of those who participate in programmes. Rather than simply counting learner numbers, we must continue to listen to the real-life stories of transformation that demonstrate the lasting value of community education for individuals, families, and communities.
The powerful stories shared throughout the meeting served as a reminder of the transformative impact of community education and its ability to create lasting change in people’s lives. This led naturally into the main focus of the session: exploring what AONTAS member organisations want and need from the Community Education Network – Training Links.
The Wheel Training Links Programme
AONTAS was delighted to secure funding through The Wheel Training Links Programme, funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science. This funding provides an important opportunity to strengthen the capacity of the community education sector and support organisations to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.
Members were invited to reflect on the priorities identified across the network and to explore how this funding can be utilised to build skills, knowledge, and capacity within their organisations. Through collaborative discussion, members helped shape a shared vision for a programme that responds directly to the needs of the community education sector and the learners and communities it serves.
Through a series of interactive breakout discussions, participants identified key training and development needs and emphasised the importance of ensuring that available funding is directed towards practical, meaningful learning opportunities. Members highlighted that training should respond directly to the realities facing organisations and support staff, volunteers, and learners in delivering the greatest possible impact within their communities.
A clear message emerged throughout the afternoon: funding should be shaped by members’ needs and informed by their lived experiences. By listening to our members, investing in their priorities, and learning from the transformative stories shared across the network, we can ensure that community education continues to create meaningful and lasting change throughout Ireland.
AONTAS would like to extend our sincere thanks to The Wheel’s Training Links fund and the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science for their valued support. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this funding will have in strengthening capacity across our member organisations and enhancing learning opportunities for adult learners throughout the community education sector.
