Guests also heard from Denis Barrett of Cork City Learning Support Services (CCLSS), Sinéad Maloney of Adult Literacy for Life, and representatives from Cork ETB, all of whom reflected on the transformative impact that accessible learning opportunities can have on individuals, families, and communities. 

Fionnaigh Hagenson, Cork Simon Employment and Training Coordinator, spoke about Evelyn’s commitment, perseverance, and determination in bringing her book to publication. Her words reflected the dedication Evelyn has shown throughout her journey. 

One of the most powerful moments of the day was hearing Evelyn share her own story. Speaking openly about the challenges she has faced, including homelessness and hardship, Evelyn reflected on the encouragement and support she received from Cork Simon Community in bringing her book to life. 

“Simon is for everyone. They don’t judge you; they treat you well.” 

Evelyn also spoke passionately about the role creativity has played in her healing journey: 

“Some people go to counselling, and that works too. But for me, writing, drawing and music are my way of telling my story. I can put my thoughts and feelings on paper. You can keep them private or share them; it’s up to you. Everybody has their own way. This is my therapy, my feelings that I can show through my creativity.” 

Her story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people are encouraged to pursue their talents, believe in their abilities, and are given the support they need to thrive.
